Jali, ini bukan nama orang atau salah tulis ( -> Jail), bukan, ini nama biji dari tanaman/tumbuhan Jali ( Coix lacryma-jobi L.), dari suku padi-padian (Poaceae), berasal dari asia tenggara dan tersebar di seluruh dunia. Beberapa varietas memiliki biji yang dapat dimakan dan dijadikan sumber karbohidrat dan juga obat Varietas yang di budidayakan ada 2 yakni : 1.   Coix lacryma-jobi var. lacryma-jobi Memiliki cangkang (pseudokarpium) keras berwarna putih, bentuk oval, dan dipakai sebagai manik-manik . 2.   Coix lacryma-jobi var. ma-yuen Dikonsumsi menjadi makanan dan menjadi bagian dari tradisi pengobatan Tiongkok . Walaupun sekarang jali nyaris tidak lagi dikonsumsi, tumbuhan ini masih dikenal orang, seperti dalam lagu gambang kromong "Jali-jali".
